The EARMA Professional Recognition Award is made by EARMA to an individual who, in the opinion of the EARMA Board, has made an outstanding contribution to the research management and administration profession.

The recipient of the 2017 EARMA Professional Recognition Award is

Dr Seán McCarthy

Dr Seán McCarthy is the Managing Director of Hyperion Ltd based in Watergrasshill, Co. Cork in Ireland. Seán has been involved in all aspects of European Research since 1980. He has been active as a researcher, research manager and research group leader.

For more than 25 years Seán has supported research organisations design and implement their European Research Strategies.

Seán, building on both his personal experience as a researcher and his extensive knowledge of Europe and European research programmes, has been providing cutting edge training at all levels in research performing organisations from directors through managers to researchers in all aspects of European research.

This award recognises the particular contribution Seán has made to supporting research managers and administrators in their day to day professional lives through his training, advice, unstinting helpfulness, openness, and his vast  knowledge and understanding of the European project.


EARMA is the professional association for research administrators and managers in Europe. Research managers and administrators are key players in research, and the profession is a fundamental component of the complete research process. EARMA is active in developing the research support profession through the provision of internationally recognised professional qualifications.
