2nd virtual euroCRIS – EARMA meeting: How are institutions dealing with the early-stage project management workflows?

Back in February, euroCRIS and EARMA held a first joint event to explore the boundaries and synergies between Research Management and Administration (RMA) and Research Information Management (RIM). As a follow-up to this previous event, this 2nd virtual euroCRIS – EARMA meeting aims to look into the way institutions deal with the early stages of project management. These cover from a very early project idea to its formalisation as an official proposal that will eventually get awarded funding within a specific research funding call and get an award contract signed.

The session aims to showcase a number of institutional case studies to explore how effectively universities in Europe are handling these early stages in a project lifecycle and what systems they are using for the purpose. These presentations will be followed by a plenary Q&A session for common themes.

Bios

 

Simon Kerridge is the Director of Research Policy & Support at the University of Kent in the UK, and a board member of EARMA. He has over twenty-five years’ experience as an RMA – a research manager and administrator – and over the past few years has led the international Research Administration as a Profession – the RAAAP initiative which he will draw on in his talk. He has presented, trained, and consulted widely on many aspects of RMA around the world including in Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. Simon holds a professional doctorate in Electronic Research Administration, is an adjunct lecturer on the Johns Hopkins University international masters’ program in Research Administration, and an editor of the Journal of Research Management and Administration. Simon will moderate this event.

 

Sadia Vancauwenbergh is the current euroCRIS President since the start of 2021. In her capacity as Head of the Information Management and Strategic Data Analysis team at Hasselt University in Belgium, Sadia ensures that research information can be registered as easily as possible by researchers in CRIS systems and can be maximally used for internal and external purposes. This includes research reporting (incl. to the Flemish Government), grant applications, and research assessment among others. Sadia also heads the ECOOM-Hasselt research group, which works for the development of research information models, classifications and related semantics in consultation with all Flemish information suppliers to the Flemish FRIS portal. She is involved in a VLIR-UOS JOINT project (“Quality control and monitoring of scientific research output on national and institutional level”) that aims to build a CRIS system that allows for the monitoring of scientific research output on the national and institutional level in Cuba and Peru, as a means to enhance the quality of scientific publications.

 

Pablo de Castro works as Open Access Advocacy Librarian at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. He is a physicist and an expert in Open Access and research information workflows and management systems, areas whose application to the implementation of Open Access he explored as coordinator for the OpenAIRE2020 and European Commission Gold Open Access Pilot at LIBER, the Association of European Research Libraries based in The Hague. Since January 2018 Pablo serves as Technical Secretary for the non-profit association euroCRIS in the Netherlands. The mission of euroCRIS is to promote cooperation within and share knowledge among the research information management (RIM) community and to promote interoperability of research information through CERIF, the Common European Research Information Format.

 

Mark C. Cox is currently the Head of Research Information Systems at King’s College London in the UK. He holds a PhD in biochemistry, but has been working on IT and information systems for more than 20 years.   He has been involved with the development and implementation of several CRIS systems, including custom-built and commercial systems. He holds an interest in how CRIS systems support research evaluation and also how CRIS systems integrate with other business systems.  Mark was a member of the euroCRIS board from 2015 to 2020.

 

Witold Kozakiewicz has a Master of Science degree in IT and a postgraduate diploma in Scientific Information and Librarianship. He is the Director of the Information and Library Centre of the Medical University of Lodz, Poland and the Head of the Board of the Lodz Academic Library Network.  Additionally, Witold is a member of the Executive Board of the European Association for Health Information and Libraries and the author of several publications and conference presentations. He is interested in innovations in librarianship, the role of the libraries in research process and Open Science movement and social media. Witold will co-present with Piotr Jagiello.

 

Piotr Jagiello currently works at the Office for Research, Strategies and Development at the Medical University of Łódź. He conducts research in Medical Technology, Public Health and Primary Care. Their current project is titled ‘Healthcare – Clinical Pathway Using BPM / BPMN’. Piotr will co-present with Witold Kozakiewicz. 

 

Rita Gil Mata is head of EU Funding at Magellan – European Affairs Consultancy. With a degree in Psychology and a PhD in Work Psychology from the University of Porto, Rita has 16+ years of experience as Funding Advisor for Research and Innovation, having worked with public and private Research Performing Organizations, such as Universities, Research Centres and non-for-profit Associations. Despite having worked in all phases of a project’s cycle, she is specialized in pre-award and strategic alignment with various European research funding programs (FP6, FP7, Horizont2020, ERASMUS +, COST, EUREKA, Eurostars, EIT, JUSTICE, REC, EEA Grants,…). Rita is also a certified trainer in Responsible Research and Innovation, as well as in Ethics & Research Integrity.

 

Rui Castro is Group Leader of Research Management at Fraunhofer Portugal since 2021 and has been R&D Group Leader at the same institution since 2011. He has over ten years of experience as research and project manager and over twenty years of professional experience in ICT. Rui holds a degree in Electrical and Computers Engineering from the University of Porto since 1996 and a M.Sc. in Digital Communication Systems and Technology from Chalmers University of Technology since 1999. Rui Castro is also a Certified Project Manager (PMP) by the Project Management Institute since 2013 and Certified Scrum Master (CSA) by the Scrum Alliance since 2015.
